An orange cat, a young girl, four very special store mannequins, and a homeless man - all in order of appearance in this story of a lost child. She not only needs to be found, but her identity must be revealed. The young child mysteriously awakens in a little used storage room of Robertson's Department , presenting four "special" mannequins with the problem of what to do with her. Is she human or mannequin?
Then the homeless man appears, with frightening possibilities. A stray orange cat shows up throughout the story as a catalyst (pardon the pun), taking events to another level of suspense. Surprises throughout and a surprise ending make this a high interest story for children.

I enjoyed reading this book again on my own. The first time Iread was when my children were young. There is a message of tolerance and acceptance of those who are different. Sort of a reverse acceptance when the special mannequins met Sunshine. There was also the acceptance of Harry who was homeless and scary to Sunshine at first, but who ends up getting a break in the end due to being accepted and not rejected. Harry, the mannequins, and the lost girl were all kind to each other. An underlying message for all of us that it pays to be nice! An important message at the end was for kids to never keep a secret from their parents. I liked how that important message was tied into the story. Such a delightful story with suspense around every corner and a neat surprise at the end too! Perfect book for beginning chapter book readers. Also clever intelligent writing for those much older. I love the return to department store shopping with images from the past of greeters, brunch coats, and ladies lingerie!

Great book! It's not only good for children, but for all ages! It has a great plot line and is an amazing way to spend time! everyone should read this book! I hope she comes out with more published books!
Having experienced the 80's first hand, I can tell you, there were a LOT of mannequins going 'round. Seeing one these days still brings to mind C-3PO, new wave video, and yes...Andrew McCarthy . In other words sci-fi, fashion and fun. Mannequins Among Us has a shopping mall full of all three along with a mysterious plot that'll keep 21st century kids fascinated without scaring the daylights out of them. Adults will dig it too, as it's stylishly written with an intelligent sense of humor. Recommended reading while listening to the classic Kraftwerk song, "Showroom Dummies."
Mannequins Among Us is a delightful story for children, and one that I'm not ashamed to say I enjoyed reading as an adult. There is a deeper meaning implied about acceptance and tolerance of those who are different from ourselves. I loved the idea of mannequins coming to life and making the store their playground; something many of us imagined as children that grew bored as our mothers endlessly shopped. The cat holds the key to discovering the secret life of the mannequins and unravelling the mystery of "Sunshine". This story has the perfect mixture of humorous and colorful characters, spooky mystery, and a suprise ending that made me smile.
